Why should you use fabric graphic printing?

Internationally, the printing trend of fabric graphic application has taken off as a result of different printing methods that have come together over time. The combination of technology developments, which allow accessible printing of large sizes, the change of customer practices including environmental awareness and confidence to utilise soft signage printing in bold and creative ways, has resulted in this new trend.

Leading display designers and manufacturers are riding the waves in the advancement of printing technology development, but what is fabric graphic applications and what are the real benefits and implications for the printing industry?

What is the definition of fabric graphic printing?

Fabric graphics is the use of textiles as a printing medium, the application is the combination of the type of fabric and the technology needed to produce the end result.

What are the benefits of fabric graphic printing?

Fabric graphic applications allows for freedom, creativity and versatility in soft signage to create a product that speaks the brand objectives and places the customer experience paramount through quality alternatives that create message cut through.

The versatile application of printed fabric means various different signage solutions are now a possibility – from portable displays to exhibition stands, TexFrameTM Fabric Displays and more.

What is dye sublimation printing and why is it the best for Fabric Graphics?

Dye Sublimation printing utilises water based ink and heat processes to directly dye the signage fabric. During the dye sublimation process, solid dye particles are changed to gas by the heat and pressure. The gaseous participles are then bonded into the fabric. When the dye becomes solid again, the colour becomes part of the fabric. Therefore, Dye Sublimation printed fabric graphic is scratch resistant, water resistant, has limited crease issues and no unpleasant smell.

Compared to alternative printing styles such as: solvent, eco solvent, UV or latex ink jet printing, which see the printed colour layer laid on top of the fabric, which  requires the fabric surface to be pre-coated allowing the design to be easily be lifted from the fabric causing scratches, crease marks in the final production of the soft signage.

Dye Sublimation allows you to have flexibility in your fabric choice with the ability to print on any polyester fabric coated and uncoated of various thicknesses and construction of a fabric.

The two types of dye sublimation printing: direct and transfer

The Direct method prints the dye directly on the coated fabric; it then endures the heat process. Often the heating equipment is integrated with the printer forming an aligned direct print to heat process. This not only speeds up the production process, it also allows the dye to penetrate deeper through the fabric to create a strong image on the opposite side of the fabric. This method is ideal for printing flag, as a single sided printing with a mirror image on the reverse side.

Alternatively, the Transfer method is when dye is printed onto the transfer paper first. The paper is then laid on top of the fabric – with both the fabric and paper entering the heat press, together. During this process, the dye is transferred into the fabric. Transfer method able to print dye into any coated and uncoated polyester fabric.

Which fabric is for me?

A large number of different fabrics are available for printing in various weight and thickness, different types of composition and finishing. You can produce large scale and small scale prints from 1.6m in width right up to a format of 3.2m.

Make fabric your next choice for signage and displays to gain a more effective long-lasting products.
